Brazos Animal Shelter Evacuates
Posted: 10:43 PM Jul 30, 2009

100 Animals took a field trip Thursday. The Brazos Animal Shelter was less than four miles from a noxious chemical fire.

When the city of Bryan evacuated, the animals went too.

Staff, volunteers, and vet students fit cages wherever they could, then moved the pets across town to Pearce Pavilion at Texas A&M University, all 55 dogs, 45 cats, rabbits and a chicken that didn’t have a name.

“It looks delicious though,” said third-year vet student Will McCauley.

Some of the animals had owners.

“Some of them belong to the shelter, they’re ours, they’re available for adoption, although we’re not doing adoptions today,” said shelter director Ashley Wesp.

Before long, evacuating residents showed up at Pearce Pavilion with their best friends.

The shelter was prepared.

“We have probably 400 pounds of dog food and a couple hundred pounds of cat food,” said Wesp.

Evacuees asked to leave their homes quickly, didn’t feel as ready.

“I’m concerned it will be overnight and I’m not quite really prepared for an overnight stay,” said Eva Benavides.

At the Pearce Pavilion, what people and their pets were prepared to do, was patiently wait.

Pearce Pavilion is located off George Bush Drive.

Shelter directors said they don’t need any pet food donations, but anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can do so online. Anyone wanting to volunteer can just show up.

Thank you to everyone who helped!

Lemonade & Helping Hands

We had a group of kids come into the shelter today that raised $90 holding a Lemonade Stand for the Brazos Animal Shelter. We are so thankful that we have groups of people, young and old, that take the extra time to do something so kind for the animals.
Thank you to Zoe, Sarah, Mya Dan & Kaila (not pictured).

Also, we would like to thank our young volunteers that chose to spend their summer with the animal shelter. This is Sam.
Sam and his mom starting coming to the shelter this summer. Thank you for your help!

Team AERO raised money for three brand new crates for the Brazos Animal Shelter. Great job!
